worked directly with nearly all of the individual filmmakers involved, and it
has proven an extraordinary experience - so much so that I cannot wait to
organise the next one.”

Dear Wanda Bendjelloul,
My apologies for writing to you in English. I heard about your work with Feminist Film Fast through the Göteborg International Film Festival, and have been very inspired by the concept of the feminist film fast, as I have also been by women's film festivals of the past.
I am the organiser of a programme called Edinburgh Film Guild New Cinema. Over the past several months, I have been working towards a goal of introducing as many new films by women to Scottish audiences as possible - certainly in at least half of our programme, and hopefully much more than that. As you may know, Edinburgh was the site of the world's second women's film festival (in 1972, only a few months after the First International Festival of Women's Films in New York), and my aim is to add to that very worthwhile tradition.
There have been many good women's film festivals (in the UK, there are at least Birds Eye View and the new London Feminist Film Festival), but there have also been very many non-women's film festivals which have focussed on recent films from one country or another. On occasion, the two have combined to create individual focusses on films by women of one particular country. However, I don't know that there has ever been any ongoing series of such focusses. I am therefore attempting to make this my approach to screening collections of films by women.

To me, it feels like taking a continuing country-by-country
approach to women's films must allow audiences to discover far more talented
female filmmakers than they could otherwise by providing the specific contexts
for these new films to be included in. I very much hope, then, that you
may be interested in the first programme I've managed to put together along
these lines: http://edinburghfilmguild.org.uk/wordpress/?page_id=1548 .
This is a focus on women filmmakers in Finland.
Specifically seeking out Finnish films by women filmmakers
has led to an incredible process of being constantly and genuinely amazed to
come across such an incredible diversity of films and filmmaking styles, very
few of which I would have experienced if I had been programming the event
differently. I've been very fortunate in being able to show all the
incredible films included here, each one made in the past two years and only
two of them previously seen in the UK. All of them are new to
Edinburgh. I have worked directly with nearly all of the individual
filmmakers involved, and it has proven an extraordinary experience - so much so
that I cannot wait to organise the next one.
At the moment, it is difficult to know how it will all turn out, but if we are successful I hope to continue with many more focuses on the work of women filmmakers from many other countries. At the moment, I am not yet been able to plan for the next country focus, as that will require this event's success first - to prove that people will be as interested as I think they will be. We must wait and see how it does. Until then, though, there are fortunately many more exceptional individual films by women which we can programme in the meantime.
I therefore hope that you will read of this event with interest and that you may even be willing to help spread word about it. If so, please let me know if there's anything I can do to help you do so. I know that most (all?) of your audience will not be anywhere near Edinburgh, but it would be enough to know that people will hear of what we are trying to do with this event and in the future.
For now, thank you so much for reading this and again for your inspiring work.
With sincere regards,
Marc David
